Overview and Features

Dubarry is an elite sailing gear manufacturer. The quality of their products is clearly reflected in their prices, but if you’re interested in getting the most bang for your buck then you’ll appreciate the fact that these boots have a reputation for lasting several years, even with heavy use.

Considered a major player in the industry, we were excited to take a closer look at Dubarry’s latest sailing boots to learn if they have what it really takes to handle rough sea expeditions, freezing water conditions, and constant exposure to cold air and seawater.

The beginner has a lot to learn about sailing, ranging from how to make a sail to basic sailing terms, and the right sailing clothes and shoes. We’ve searched high and low to find the best pair of sailing boots on the market and came across these boots by Dubarry. Dubarry is a company that’s constantly in competition with Musto for the best sailing gear on the market. Here, Dubarry is clearly the winner.

These boots feature a slip-on style that makes them easy to put on and take off. They’re also incredibly breathable, which is a must for any sailor. Equipped with thick rubber, non-marking soles, these boots work well for any type of sailing situation including yacht racing and warm days casually cruising.

Versatile, comfortable, and equipped with water-resistant coating and a breathable water-resistant liner, these boots can be worn on deck and off, and feature a classic design that makes them a great choice for casual wear or technical sailing gear.

Warranty

These boots come with a one-year product warranty. Considering the price, we were hoping for a longer warranty, but the durable design and the boot’s reputation for being indestructible make these boots well worth the price.

Performance

Low-cost rubber sailing boots or neoprene dinghy boots are a good choice for coastal or inshore work. In fact, with the right socks, both options can be the perfect solution for the sailor on a budget. But if you plan on spending any time at sea, then a pair of high-quality boots is crucial. These Ultima sailing boots will last much longer than a pair of boots made out of low-cost materials.

The combination of quality materials and a solid design are evident in the Ultima boots, which are made in Ireland. Many sailors have reported that they’ve logged countless sea miles with both cruisers and racers. Based on the feedback from buyers, we get the impression that these boots are nearly indestructible.

One of the main reasons these boots are so popular is their Gore-Tex lining, which makes them incredibly breathable while also working to wick away sweat from your feet, keeping them dry around the clock. You won’t get this type of protection from lower-priced boots such as the Gore-Tex Ocean Racer Sailing Boots. These boots are pro quality and can be a true asset if you’re spending a lot of time at sea.

But Gore-Tex aside, these boots simply have a reputation for durability and comfort. These are the type of boots you want to rely on daily for work out on the water, or for recreational purposes. In fact, many sailors and anglers also wear these boots on land since they’re so comfortable. These boots are very versatile, which is exactly what you want in a pair of boots you can wear for work and play.

Design

These boots are right at home on board, but they can also work as part of your everyday wear. They’re perfect for rainy days on land as part of your casual wear wardrobe. On board, these boots offer the type of traction and functionality you need.

The leather exterior complements the Gore-Tex interior. The exterior features water-repellent coatings that are incorporated in the tanning process, as opposed to having the waterproof coating applied on the exterior at the last minute. According to the manufacturer, the waterproofing helps to prevent the leather from cracking and shrinking after the boots have been wet multiple times. The coating also makes it much easier to flush away excess salt at the end of the day, helping to make the boots lighter during use because they don’t absorb much water, even in rough conditions.

Another issue sailors run into with basic rubber boots is dealing with chaffed calves since the uppers constantly rub up against the legs. With the Ultima boots, this isn’t an issue thanks to the softer lining located between the Gore-Tex. The Gore-Tex is placed between the inside leather layer and the wearer’s skin.

The back of the boots features a lycra panel. This stretchy material makes it easy to slip the boots on and off.

These boots do not come with gaiters, which means you’ll need to purchase a pair separately.

Sole Design

Dubarry Ultima Sailing Boots

With sailing shoes and boots, aside from liner, nothing is more important than the soles. Traction is the name of the game and we’re happy to report that these shoes offer better than average traction.

The boot’s non-marking, injection molded rubber sole is designed with durability in mind. The minimal seams are also durable and designed to withstand heavy, regular wear. In the footbed of the shoes, antimicrobial materials have been used to keep odor at bay.

The soles do not offer the type of traction you’ll get from lightweight dinghy racing sailing boots, but they do offer better than average gripability, compared to other models in this price range.

Lining

As with any type of boots you buy, you’re going to want to pay attention to what type of material the liner is made out of. This is especially true with sailing boots, since it’s very important to keep your feet nice and dry, yet a certain amount of breathability should also be expected.

These boots come equipped with Gore-Tex liners, the best of the best in terms of the type of liners you want in your sailing boots.

The Gore-Tex lining works to keep water out but allows perspiration to escape so your feet can breathe. Gore-Tex is said to be one of the leading material choices in terms of durability and breathability. These boots will keep your feet snug and dry, even during rough sea conditions.
